Prayer – When the Unexpected and Unknown Happen

Heavenly Father, unexpected and unknown things can disrupt our world, but You are delighted when we stop wrestling for control, take Your hand, and lean upon Your arms.

Observing Athenian altars dedicated to various gods, the Apostle Paul found one inscribed, “To the Unknown God.” Using sharp, holy humor, Paul commented:

Acts 17:23
…considering the objects of your worship, I even found an altar with this inscription: “TO THE UNKNOWN GOD.” Therefore, the One whom you worship without knowing, Him I proclaim to you.

Lord, life can blindside us with sudden chaos; faith is attacked, fears mount, and in the confusion, You can feel like an “Unknown God.”

Yet Your Word gives us a relatable picture of our heart. The disciples were gripped by fear when an unexpected storm whipped up waves and tossed their boat. Then they saw a figure walking toward them:

Mark 6:49
And when they saw Him walking on the sea, they supposed it was a ghost, and cried out.

That “ghost” they mistakenly feared was actually the exact breakthrough they needed: You, Jesus!

Then You spoke straight into their panic, “Be of good cheer! It is I; do not be afraid” (Mark 6:50), and those power-filled words shattered their fears. You entered their boat and calmed the storm.

God, You’re NOT the “Unknown God”; You’re the “GOD of the UNKNOWN” and Lord over all!

Lord, Your ways may seem unexpected, but You’re the same “yesterday, today, and forever” (Hebrews 13:8), and You’ll see us through it all!

I stand on and confess Your three-fold promise:

Isaiah 52:12
[My Todays:] For you shall not go out with haste… [no worrying or panic!] 
[My Tomorrows:] For the Lord will go before you,
[My Yesterdays:] And the God of Israel will be your rear guard.

You clear the road ahead and have my back so that the unexpected cannot rob my peace. In the midst of the unknown, You’re my “Very Present Help in Trouble.” When anxiety screams at me to hustle and panic, I’ll silence the noise, “be still,” and anchor my soul in who You are (Psalm 46:1,10).

Lord, I am keeping it completely real: when the unexpected and unknown hit, I desperately need HELP. “From whence comes my HELP?” (Psalm 121:1) Right now, I lift my eyes to You:

My HELP comes from You: my FATHER and CREATOR.

My HELP comes from the Lord,
Who made heaven and earth.

My HELP comes from You: JESUS, my HIGH PRIEST.

Hebrews 4:15-16
For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses…
Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to HELP in time of need.

Wow, what peace I have, knowing You’re interceding for me!

Romans 8:34 (see also Hebrews 7:25)
Who is he who condemns? It is Christ who died, and furthermore is also risen, who is even at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us.

My HELP comes from You: HOLY SPIRIT, my “HELPER,” Who abides with me forever!

John 14:16,26
And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another *HELPER, that He may abide with you forever...
But the *HELPER, the Holy Spirit… He will teach you ALL THINGS, and bring to your remembrance ALL THINGS that I said to you.

[*Greek for “Helper” is: “Parakletos,” literally “called to one’s side.” It is translated “comforter, guide, teacher, advocate, intercessor.”]

Father, my faith doesn’t depend on an easy escape from the fire or the flood; it rests on the unstoppable reality that You’re right in the center of it with us, just as You walked with Daniel’s three friends inside the flaming furnace (Daniel 3).

Lord, I am Yours! Your supernatural presence covers me in every rising tide and blazing trial:

Isaiah 43:1-2
Fear not, for I have redeemed you;
I have called you by your name; You are Mine.
When you pass through the waters, I will be WITH YOU…
When you walk through the fire, you shall not be burned…

With You walking beside me, Jesus, the unexpected is no longer a “strange thing” – 

1 Peter 4:12-13
Beloved, do not think it STRANGE concerning the fiery trial… as though some STRANGE THING happened to you; but rejoice…

You, Lord, equip me with real-time wisdom for the “what,” the “where,” and the “when”—clarity on what to do, direction on where to go, and discernment on when to move. I boldly claim Your open invitation to ask:

James 1:2,5,6
…count it all joy when you fall into various trials,
Knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience…
If any of you lacks WISDOM, let him ask of God… But let him ask in faith…

I refuse to fixate on the unknown or fear the unexpected. I fix my eyes on You—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit! I lock hands with the mighty grip You extend toward me:

Isaiah 41:10
Fear not, for I am with you;
Be not dismayed, for I am your God.
I will strengthen you,
Yes, I will help you,
I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.

Holding Your hand, I step out boldly into the unexpected and charge straight into the unknown— in faith, EXPECTING Your goodness and KNOWING You are my God!
